Nokia have never really hit it off with
clamshell phones - and unfortunately the Nokia 6125
is another demonstration that Nokia don't quite get
it when it comes to this type of handset.
Admittedly, the Nokia 6125 does have
some appealing features. It has quad band GSM, EDGE,
Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, expandable memory
using microSD cards and an FM radio. The design is understated
and smart, and the antenna has been tucked inside the
case.
So quite why Nokia chose to ruin a promising
handset by only equipping it with a basic 128x160 pixel
display is a mystery, and given that most multimedia
clamshells seem to have external media controls (such
as the Sharp GX40
and Samsung
E730)then it seems to be a little crippled in that
respect too.
The screen is the thing that irritates
us most - Nokia have supplied the 6125 with what appears
to be a decent camera, plus there's a web browser with
support for Flash, an email client and video playback,
but the screen resolution on the 6125 is frankly not
good enough to support these useful features.
Then,
Nokia equip the 6125 with expandable memory, a versatile
multimedia player and radio plus stereo Bluetooth -
but they don't include any dedicated multimedia keys.
It's not as if the Nokia 6125 is particularly
lightweight - at 98 grams it is no lighter than
the hugely more capable Sharp
GX40, for example.
It's very hard to figure out what Nokia
hoped to achieve with the 6125. It doesn't quite cut
it as a multimedia phone, the limited display limits
it as a camera phone, the battery life is too short
for a business phone and the looks are far too conservative
(i.e. dull) for a fashion phone.
On the plus side, Nokia say that the
6125 will cost around €230 before taxes and subsidy
which is pretty good value. When you take the price
into account, the odd mishmash of features doesn't look
so bad.. but we just wish that Nokia could get their
act together and come up with a clamshell phone that's
as good as other handsets in their range.
